1753 – Fiji

Bula Vinaka!

When you get to Fiji you will learn to say Bula to everyone you meet. It is aloha, welcome, hi, hola, bonjour, or sawadee ka. Strangers on the street will look you in the eye with a big smile on their face and say Bula to you. It’s a little off-putting at first because of how many times you will say it, but it soon becomes a warm honest gesture of Fijian hospitality and kindness.

Getting off the plane after a potential 10-12 hour flight you are greeted by local musicians serenading you with song. It’s very similar to the Hawaiian band playing at baggage claim in Maui. It sets the tone for a wonderful cultural experience.

Out plan was to spend several days at a resort and then go onboard the Blue Lagoon ship for a seven-day cruise through the Yasawa Islands north of Fiji. Then, we would spend a couple of days onshore and off to Hawaii and home.
