Active Pass was one of the most interesting spots we experienced on our short voyage. The tides are quite fierce in this area of the world and as you can see from the maps below, this narrow channel is one of the the only navigable water between Vancouver and the open sea. In a smaller boat (even the size of Kaisei – 150’) if you don’t catch the tide in your direction it can mean trouble. Portions of the pass are only a couple hundred yards wide and there is a a lot of ship traffic going both ways. On our voyage we were passed by two huge ferries going in opposite directions. Quite a thrill being that close to large vessels going full speed ahead. Check it out.
