1837-Kilauea Volcano, HI

Kilauea is at it again! Several weeks ago scientists were measuring seismic activity in the area expecting an eruption. And it happened! Fountaining lava over 300 feet in the air filling the caldera with a glowing pool of lava bands slowing spinning in a counter clockwise direction. Two days ago we made the trip from Hilo, HI (it’s only 26 miles) to the Volcano National Park for the thrill of a life time (as of the writing of this post, two days later, the volcano has stopped fountaining). So we got there just in time.

We went to Volcano House restaurant at the National Park to the viewing area that is about three miles away from the fountains. The restaurant is THE spot to view the eruption. The sky was perfectly clear with a hang-nail moon and the North Star glowing brightly. Photography was difficult since the volcano is three miles away and all I had was my handheld iPhone on full magnification with a black as black night. The videos are a little grainy and not like you would get with a large camera with tripod. Anyway, the iPhone did okay. Check it out.
