This is a small village we visited as the boat stopped at numerous beaches and islands on our journey through the Yasawa Islands. The Chief’s spokesman (probably the Chief himself) gave us a history of the island and tour of the church, community hall and school. We all had a fresh coconut and ended the day back on the beach. Visiting the village all women had to wear a sarong below the knees and shoulders covered. Men had to also wear a sarong.
School is very important in the local villages. Kindergarten to 8th grade stay in the village school. High school youths go to boarding school to the larger populated portion of the island. College and university education is available to all with student loans that are paid back with community service. Fiji has a 99% literacy rate.
