Death Valley National Park has a really sweet public access camping situation going on.Dotted across the landscape are a few old mining houses that some private organizations make available for first-com-first-serve camping. Each camp has a flagpole and sits high above the house. As you drive down the main first road you look so see if there is a flag flying from the pole meaning that someone has gotten to the facility first. Don’t go up the road.
We found this old house open to the elements but good enough for me. Jimmy slept in his truck tent. It started to rain for a few moments so I set up my tent inside the house. I knew it was going to be problematic later that night. I got in my tent and zipped me up tight. Nothing was going to get in to get me – and boy did they try. The mice and rats came out and scampered everywhere. I shined my light on the wall and there they were climbing the wall. Nobody’s getting me.
