1790-Hilo, HI

I’ve loved Hilo, Hawaii since the first time I visited in the early 1970’s. It is old-school Hawaii living the concept of “aloha.” Time has slowed down and people are gentle and caring. We stayed a few nights on a ranch with horses, goats, and chickens. It was extremely peaceful. Down the path from our little cabin was a trail leading to a waterfall and jungle.

We happened to be in Hilo Thanksgiving week. Unbeknownst to us it was the night of the Big Island Xmas parade. The city closed down and people from all over the island came to Hilo for the big event. We didn’t know anything about when we ended up in a restaurant on the parade route. Somehow we scored a corner window to see and video the parade. This parade was so local and so sweet and so gentle we were thrilled to be a voyeur into their space. Having experiences Mardi Gras in New Orleans too many times, it was so beautiful to see the local people having the time of the their lives. Marching bands from all over the island paraded, big rig trucks were the floats, and anyone in a Santa suite could follow along.
