The Rhone River was tamed many years ago with the construction of twelve dams and locks that controlled periodic flooding, produced hydroelectric power, and allowed for traversing the entire river during all seasons of the year. These dams and locks changed the Rhone River from a white water thrill ride to a gentle cruise. Avignon is at an altitude of 75 feet above sea level and 300 miles north, Lyon is at an altitude of 775 feet above sea level. So, the boat needs to be lifted 700 feet above sea level over the course of the 12 locks. Most of the locks were a lift of 40 – 50 feet with one lock lifting over the highest dam at 85 feet.
