We stopped in Ammon, Jordan to visit Petra which is located in the south of the country. We walked through an old-school area of the city and visited small shops selling almost everything you could imagine. Jordan, surrounded by troubled counties, has a history of 35 years of peace. It is the Switzerland of the Middle East where all varieties of religious zealots are welcome, but you don’t do fighting amongst yourselves while in the country. It was troubling to see road signs that directed you to Israel, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon. These troubled countries were only kilometers from where we were in Ammon and the fighting was only a couple hours away.
The hallway to the check-in desk at the hotel is a representation of the canyon from which you emerge to first see the Treasury at the old city of Petra. Janine hooked up with an old friend and they dances down the hall.
We walked around old-town and visited every shop and sampled all of the goods.
