t. Rushmore is an iconic depiction of the American spirit carved out of the rock in South Dakota. Unfortunately, my experience at the sculpture was not pleasant. Thousands of tourists filled the huge parking structure with lines of cars competing for that one last space. Walking up the steps I was greeted by Evangelicals preaching the gospel and getting in your face handing out materials in the “Free Speech” zone. Beside them were old hardened Viet Nam veteran motorcycle gang members waiving the American flag and shouting God Bless America. It was such a chaotic circus, I quickly took my photos and left in under fifteen minutes and headed towards the Crazy Horse Monument – where I spent several hours.
