La Recoleta Cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. It vies for top honors with Pere Lachaise (click here for earlier posts). La Recoleta is built around a cathedral and houses 4,691 above ground vaults. Many of the vaults are in disrepair with family fortunes changing and maintenance costs soaring. Some vaults are pristine and still receive flowers on a weekly basis.
